This article is meant to help people do a very specific thing. It also talks about the steps you need to take to create an account, sign in, or use the self-help features for people who forget their username or password. Keep in mind, though, that it only gives general information, just like this site. It’s not a rule. There is no rule about it. It is not advice about the law.

Everything You Need To Know About NMLS

The Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (“NMLS” or “System”) is the official system for licensing or registering non-depository financial services in participating state agencies, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam.

In these places, NMLS is the official way for companies and people to apply for, change, renew, or give up license authorities. 66 state or territorial government agencies manage NMLS on their behalf. NMLS does not give or take away license authority on its own.

NMLS is used by 59 state agencies for mortgage licensing, and 55 use it to handle licensing for other nonbank entities (e.g., money services businesses, consumer finance and debt).

Under the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Regulation G (SAFE Mortgage Licensing Act – Federal Registration of Residential Mortgage Loan Originators), which came out on December 19, 2011, NMLS is also the system of record for registering depositories, subsidiaries of depositories, and mortgage loan originators (MLOs).

NMLS was started in January 2008 by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) and the American Association of Residential Mortgage Regulators (AARMR). It is owned by State Regulatory Registry LLC, which also runs it (SRR).

The goal of NMLS is to take the best parts of local, state-based financial services regulation and put them on a national platform. This will make it easier for regulators to work together and share information, make business more efficient, and protect consumers better.

How To Request An NMLS Account

Before you send in an account request form, you have to choose whether you want an account for yourself or for a business or institution. User accounts for a company or institution are set up by the organization’s Account Administrator.

But account administrators will have full access to your company’s record on NMLS and will be able to fill out and send a complete company record to any participating state regulator or the federal registry.

Individual user accounts are for people who need to do things related to Individual (MU2/MU4) and/or MU4R filings. Through the Request an Account link, new users can also ask for an NMLS account. Follow the steps below to find out how to ask for an account.
