I’m not going to sugarcoat it: I despise Upwork. I’m a big fan of Fiverr.

Upwork, in my opinion, requires the freelancer to follow the regulations put forth by both Fiverr and the customer. 

Upwork takes a long time to set up and often takes months to show a financial return. 

Yes, it is one of the largest online markets; but, with that scale comes a lot of competition. 

This provides the worst of both worlds in terms of entering the gig economy, with a payment structure that encourages long-term contracts and tools that benefit the customer. 

In summary, Upwork has many of the drawbacks of traditional job hunting and employment, but none of the security or benefits.

Fiverr isn’t without flaws. Waiting for gigs may be aggravating at times, and controlling job volume can be difficult if you get too many. 

It does, however, put you in the driver’s seat.

You have the freedom to deliver the sort of job that you want: work that you like and that plays to your abilities. 

You have the freedom to establish your own pricing, work with as many clients as you like, and even market your jobs on social media and other channels.

But, of course, it is only one man’s perspective. 

There are reasonable grounds to favour either of these platforms, and each has its own set of benefits. 

The greatest choice, if you’re prepared to put in the effort, is to try both.
